Literature and Language Arts

Albert Einstein Academy fosters a life-long love for literature and writing by integrating listening, speaking, reading, and writing through the use of age-appropriate literature and basic skills instruction. Our teachers expose students to different authors’ styles, facilitate interpretation of text, and encourage students to read for pleasure and information. A balanced reading approach integrates phonics and quality literature.

Written Language

Our students learn the process of writing and become writers from the moment they enter Albert Einstein Academy. In Kindergarten, students dictate stories and experiment with writing, gradually developing more advanced writing skills as they progress through the grades. Incorporating the Handwriting Without Tears program into daily curriculum improves our students’ early self-confidence and provides them with unique strategies for good letter formation, spacing and neatness, and cursive connections. Our teachers encourage drafting and conferencing of written work and emphasize the revision/editing process to help students prepare writing for publication. Students explore creative and expository writing as they hone their grammar, vocabulary, and spelling skills.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies curriculum emphasizes critical thinking skills and current events, while integrating reading, writing, and oral communication skills. Students develop an understanding of the diversity of the world by exploring geography and its influences on culture. In Kindergarten through 3rd grade, students study self, family, and community. Students then progress to the study of the larger communities in which they live, including local, American, and world cultures. Incorporating the values of tikkun olam (repairing of the world) and derekh eretz (the way of the land) build our students’ appreciation of how ideas, events, and individuals produce change.

Science

Our hands-on and inquiry based Science program allows students to observe, investigate, and discover. By introducing concrete experiences, students develop conceptual understanding and scientific literacy using scientific thinking, methods, and processes. Field trips and guest instructors supplement school instruction.

Mathematics

Our Everyday Math program emphasizes lively activities using real materials and reflecting the latest research of how children learn at each developmental stage. Through this program, students develop an understanding of math concepts gradually, from Kindergarten through 6th grade, through repeated exposure to topics. A spiral curriculum introduces children to a topic several times over a three-year period and prepares students to enter pre-algebra at the completion of Grade 5.

The K-5 Everyday Mathematics curriculum includes the following mathematical strands:
• Algebra and Uses of Variables
• Data and Chance
• Geometry and Spatial Sense
• Measures and Measurement
• Numeration and Order
• Patterns, Functions, and Sequences
• Operations
• Reference Frames
